My 6 safe bets

· Fashion

My objective to keep a “capsule” and optimal closet might be long to achieve. I still need to sort out everything, knowing that I haven’t got back all the clothes that I’ve stocked in the cellar during the work in our apartment.

This being said, today I selected 6 of my key accessories/clothes ; pieces I was able to test in all kind of situations the past years.

I thought it could be interesting to share with you my (negatives and positives) impressions in case you want to invest in a long lasting wardrobe.

1/ Rockstud “Valentino” stilettos

Available here

DATE OF PURCHASE

May 2013. Purchased during a shopping session with my two Corsican friends, Johanna and Alizée. For the fun anecdote, this last one bought the same model (but size of the heel was 10cm). She confirmed that she still has them, she loves them but never wears them (probably because of the heel!).

PROS

•Make every kind of basic outfits more interesting, perfect for nights out (actually quite simple, I only wear them when I am invited to a ‘fancy’ party or wedding)

Perfect heel size (6cm) allowing to walk and dance during long hours.

Resistant (they endured heavy rain here without consequence = but anyhow I need to waterproof them)

CONS

Thin heel which requires a careful attention when I walk on cobblestones or metal gates.

The price (but if we calculate the “Cost per wear” ratio they’ve been highly profitable.)

2/ Play “Comme des Garçons” Breton shirt

Available here

DATE OF PURCHASE

April 2014. Made in Japan, bought in Japan for less than 100€. What else?

PROS

Basic and timeless look with a little fantasy (emblematic logo with a shape of heart)

Stay on well (no distortion or pill) after multiples machine cleaning at 30/40°C (normal program) .

CONS

•Possibility to meet a large number of people wearing it in the streets or on Instagram/blogs, but I don’t mind.

3/ “La Redoute” bucket bags

Available here

DATE OF PURCHASE

September 2016 in black first and since I was very convinced I purchased the nude color after in January 2017.

PROS

Price : 39,99€ (difficult to find cheaper).

Vegan leather (=or imitation leather) which might be mistaken for real leather. I’ve been asked a few times if it was a luxury bag.

Simple and useful (large capacity without hurting the shoulder, inside zipped pocket).

Not sensitive to bad weather or stains: quick cleaning with a sponge and all set!

CONS

•I’ve only had one year to really judge the useful life but for information I’ve carried the black during almost all my trips without a fail: Florida, New York, Scotland, etc.

Imitation leather which might seems not fancy enough for some people (but personally I don’t think it looks “cheap” at all).

4/ “Dr Martens” 1961 patent leather derbies

Available here

DATE OF PURCHASE

February 2014. Purchased after seeing Maureen wearing them, who also confirmed the comfort and fickleness.

PROS

The thickness of the sole embellished the leg and absorbs the shocks

Massive shape but no too much to allow wearing it with skirts or pants .

Patent leather which gives at the same time a rock and fancy touch, and protects in case of weather. .

CONS

Required adaptation time as all the Dr Martens shoes to make them softer. But once it’s done, we can walk long hours with them without problem.

The patent lather starts to crackle at the top of the feet but I am thinking about sticking the small pieces of “shred” to hide it.

5/ “La Redoute” Cashmere sweaters

Available here

DATE OF PURCHASE

January 2015 for the first one. I then later on purchased the rest of the collection (turtlenecks, funnel necks, different colors, etc.). You saw me all the time wearing them the two last winters here, here or there.

PROS

The price: about 99€ for turtlenecks and funnel necks and about 89€ for round collars (wait for the regular promotions on the website for a more affordable prices: up to -40% to -50% quite often)

Warmness and softness of the cashmere: not itchy, you can wear without anything underneath of just a simple shirt or bodysuits.

They do not pill or only a very little.

•Easy to upkeep: No need to hand wash, they can be easily cleaned in a machine with wool program.

CONS

•Default which is not actually one: choose one size bigger from your usual size if you would like to wear it loose (like here)

Protect it from the moth (like all other cashmere sweater) when you keep it in your closet.

6/ “Burberry” trench

Available here

DATE OF PURCHASE

November 2015. Introduced the very first time on this blog in January 2016, I’ve worn it recently here. Purchased second-hand, almost new at a price divided by 4 compared to original price.

PROS

The quality: the running drops when it rains (like a real trench!), the finishing touches, the inner coat.

The timeless cut.

CONS

The prohibitive price: I am not quite sure I would have invested in this trench at its initial retail price, even considering its excellent quality. Make vintage trench your first choice, they are cheaper, and ask for assessment like me to make sure it’s not counterfeit.

Dry cleaning (but thankfully we don’t need to clean it every week)

The stiffness if you usually prefer loose trenches. (English translation by Quiterie)

Immunity

· Fashion

Do you remember this cotton chambray blazer ? I wore it twice on the blog, once in 2012 and once in 2014 (capillary flashback again!). The detail you don’t know is that it was sold with a belt that I’ve just ignored for many years as I wanted to keep it open.

This year, I wear this blazer with the belt to emphasis the silhouette, and I am quite satisfied of it.

My immunity necklace

Around my neck, a nice present from Adeline Affre, who asked what I wanted to engrave on this silver medallion. You can better see the writing here but just simply be aware, nothing can happen to me anymore when I wear it! (English translation by Quiterie)

My style evolution

· Fashion, Illustration

On the 25th of may this year, my blog celebrated its10 yearsof existence. In 2007, I had started on a whim after discovering Balibulle blog and leaving her tons of comments (her and other bloggers … social media didn’t exist at the time). I was first on Canalblog then here starting 2008.

SO much has happened in 10 years : you saw me grow up (and grow old-er), evolve, as did my tastes.

At first I was very attracted by colors, patterns, extravagant layering … and now I’m headed in the opposite direction : minimalist and hopefully later, “capsule” wardrobe

I thought it would be interesting to analyse this evolution not to prove that I have very sound taste in fashion (2007 and 2008 will discredit me forever) but to remember, and notice how much following the latest trends isn’t necessarily a good thing : “less is more”.

2007 : Legging fetish

The 2007 archives can’t be found on this blog. Not that I’m ashamed (although …) but because I juste never mustered up the courage to migrate my old blog here.

You’re not missing out on much, apart from approximative pictures of yours truly with myhead chopped off (Anonymous was the word back in 2007), Desigual-like dresses worn with leggingand Uggs.

2008 : keffiyeh & fringes

Thekeffiyeh, this amazingscarf with charms and pompoms

The star of the show obviously, along with my fringes boots andlayered cardigans. In2008, I was wearing my whole closet all at once!

2009 : a tentative of feminization

As a child and a teenager, I hated wearing dresses or anything “girly”, but in 2009, you can notice I’m erring slightly on the em>dark sidewith a few more delicate fabrics (Lace ordresses), poses with great sensual potential, I left leggings behind (thank God) but still this “Mega Warrior” hair, with the well-known upwards spikes (I even went as far as posting a tutorial).

Note, the“officer jacket”and “Pirate boots” trend. (these are waiting in my basement as we speak … they won’t be making a comeback with me!).

2010 : Leo & Rock

In 2010, leopard print is everywhere on fashion blogs : I’m no exception, and I’ll wear it anyway I can. The snood is also everywhere

I was never Rock’n Roll but spikes andleather are on everyone of my outfits

2011 : Grungy shorts & continuous touseled hair

In 2011, the unconvicing rockstar in me found its perfect biker jacket (still perfect after 6 yearsof wear). I’m also deeply in love with shredded jean shorts and forplatform sneakers.

The outfits are less shameful and not as complicated, but this hair continues to make me look like Sangoku (I wasn’t sponsored by hair gels I swear).

2012 : Platform sneakers

Spikes andbiker jacket are still at the top of my list in my closet, in 20122012… along with the new star of the year, the perfecto coat .

After a number of hesitations (probably justified), I finally cave in and buy Isabel Marant sneakers. I’m still trying to sell them today. Fail.

2013 : My hair is free

In 2013, My style is edging towards british and preppy : this is all Alexa Chung’s fault.

But highlight of the year : in august I abandon all hair trickeries (except maybe the hair bandanafrom American Apparel) and let them live their life !

2014 : Shhh! It’s growing

In 2014,I’m letting my hair grow out, I’m trying something new sometimes with lack of volume. But anyway, I was willing to try

Not a lot of extravanganza : my love formen suits d’homme s growing stronger by the day. I am obviously a future Kingsman …

2015 : Back to short hair

In 2015, my hair has never been so long on this blog : I try a couple waves, wonder about the future of my hair and finally cut it during summer. . I feel lighter and more “me”. Overalls, scarves, bandanasare my end of the year fashion obsessions.

2016 : Never without my bandana

In 2016, theneck scarf is almost mandatory in my outfits. A dream comes true when I wear a suit in front of the Kingsmanshop.

I start thinking about investing in quality and intemporal pieces (like this trench or this camel coat).

2017 : It’s all about the basics

Slight hair changes : this is the easiest option style of all 10 years. In the good days, I can even have a little volume without trying too hard.

The year isn’t over yet, but you’ll notice I’m not posting as many outfits as I used to: less time, but also because I’m trying to get rid of more than half my wardrobe in the upcoming months. .

I haven’t yet attained my ideal style-wise, and I don’t know if I’ll ever make it, but I’m becoming more aware of the (fruitful or not) excess of the past years.

Don’t worry, I still love fashion, but I want to focus of the basics, not try too hard, favor quality over quantity (in all domains), and have more time to enjoy the rest. (English translation by Marine)
